Artist statement:
The National Audubon Society’s recent climate report found that over half of the bird species in North America are at risk of extinction. Birds have long been an inspiration for many. Throughout history, birds have been observed in art and symbolized a variety of ideas in stories, poems, and literature. Sadly, if we don’t take action now, natural history museums and art may be the only available place where we can continue to see our avian friends. Let’s work together to stop declining populations and ensure that generations to come can continue to observe and be inspired by birds and all their beauty, in nature. This exhibit was created with the intention that viewers can interact with each painting to learn facts about the birds they are viewing, along with some of the things they can do to help birds adapt to our changing planet.
About the Artist:
Wendy Wright was born in Wisconsin in 1981 and is currently based out of Texas. She completed her B.A. in Anthropology at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro and her M.S. in Ecology and Conservation Biology at Texas A&M University. Her work is heavily influenced by her love of the natural world and the time she spends traveling through it. Primarily working in Acrylics, her work is rich in color with excellent depth and tonal ranges. Her contemporary style is continually evolving and often has an ethereal feel. Much of her work aims to mix science and art to raise awareness of the current climate crisis, losses in biodiversity, and spread of invasive species.
